Traditionally educators have focused on knowledge with the hope that children will make informed choices regarding health, physical activity, and so on. Sadly, that emphasis has led to a nation of well-informed, yet obese, couch potatoes.
At Fitness Finders, we agree that a base knowledge is very important. But how we behave on a daily basis is what really makes a difference. This is true if we are addressing any behavior, from activity to character to reading.
If we want to make a difference, we need to emphasize a change in behavior. Positive feedback has long been the method used to create habits in scientific experiements in biology, psychology and the social sciences. Neuroscience now shows us how the brain changes in motivation (via dopamine receptors) and in habit formation (via long-term potentiation). Our programs and incentives, developed at Fitness Finders, use positive feedback to create repetition of positive behavior which, in turn, creates positive outcomes. In other words, "It Works!"
Our website offers everything you need to run effective school programs emphasizing fitness, physical activity, reading and character development. We also provide a host of incentives to help you encourage young people to live fuller, happier and more productive lives. We are here to help you in the important task of shaping America's future. Our Mileage Club, I  To Read, Character Bound, four other programs and low cost incentives have had dramatic acceptance. Currently nearly 25,000 schools across the United States and Canada utilize our programs and services. Several of you have asked: Why does a fitness company (Fitness Finders, Inc.) provide reading, character development in addition to incentives which address math, art, music, attendance, school spirit etc.? We started as a fitness company in 1969, providing group exercise classes in communites near the eastern seaboard of the US in the late 60s and early 70s.
In a relatively short time, however, we started doing workshops and seminars for YMCAs across the US, Canada and Australia. The success of these efforts soon attracted the attention of several Fortune 500 companies, hospitals, communities, universites, foundations, military groups plus federal and state agencies. We were asked to create programs and services for their workers and constituents; conduct research on program effectiveness and develop curriculum materials for people of all ages. We continue to provide workshop and consulting services to various organizations and agencies.
Our educational expertise is quite diversified. We have taught kindergartners, graduate students and learners in every grade in between. Our professional staff has more than 125 years of experience in the development of school programs and teaching. These years of experience have taught us to look at young people and their educational opportunities wholistically. We will continue to adapt, as we did in the past, to the changing educational environment. We will be providing new programs and incentives cutting across all disciplines.
